Dmytro Dobrietsov

Engineer. Creator. Human.

I build things I wish existed — usually because I need them myself. Software happens to be my favorite tool for turning those ideas into something real.

I've never been particularly good at defining myself through a profession or a single interest. There are simply too many things I find fascinating. Engineering is one of the constants, but I'm just as comfortable disappearing into music, psychology, technology, a good conversation, or some completely new subject I knew nothing about yesterday.

02 / Purpose

Why I build

Most of my projects begin with something simple: I need something that doesn't exist, or I come across something that could work much better. Eventually curiosity wins, and I start wondering whether I could build it myself.

That's where the fun begins. Every project gives me an excuse to learn something new, and learning is a big part of why I keep doing this. If the result solves my problem, that's already a win. If other people need it too, it becomes useful. And if it eventually makes money and gives me more freedom to create — even better.

Somewhere at the intersection of enjoying what I do, being good at it, helping people and getting paid for it lives my version of ikigai.

HOW I GOT HERE

Engineer, not just programmer.

I grew up in a family of engineers and learned to solder as a kid, although engineering really became part of my identity much later. At university I studied optics and spectroscopy and discovered circuitry and programming along the way.

What fascinated me was how similar electronics and software felt. A circuit was almost like a program made out of physical components: every element had a purpose, the pieces interacted, and together they became a working system.

I originally planned to become a system administrator. Instead, software development won me over because it dramatically shortened the path between an idea and something that actually exists.

Programming is a tool. Creating things is the point.

I've worked with different languages and technologies over the years, but I've never cared much about defining myself through one of them. Syntax can be looked up. Commands can be forgotten and rediscovered. What matters more to me is understanding the system: what we're building, why its pieces exist and how they should work together.

I like people.

For years my home was a little social hub. Friends came over for parties, music, conversations or sometimes for no particular reason at all. There were days when people would simply hang out on my balcony while I sat nearby working.

Life changed. Friends scattered across different countries, war changed the way we meet, and my own life went through a few turns as well. I still miss that feeling of having a place where people naturally gather.

I'd like to create that kind of space around myself again someday.

05 / Atmosphere

Why guitar?

When I was a kid, a girl from our neighborhood played guitar and sang. I still remember one evening when she was sitting outside surrounded by maybe twenty people — older guys, kids, a few girls — and everybody was simply quiet, listening.

I was fascinated by the fact that one person with a guitar could create that atmosphere around them. I remember thinking that I wanted to be able to do the same.

I already loved singing, so guitar came naturally after that. Years later dancing joined the list, and I discovered another way of experiencing music: not producing it, but expressing it with your whole body.

Note on the margin

Partner dancing: basically sex without the intimate part.

06 / Curiosity

I can talk about almost anything.

Not because I know everything — quite the opposite. I simply enjoy entering somebody else's world for a while. Tell me about something you understand and care about, and I'll probably start asking questions.

The subject can be almost anything: technology, psychology, music, business, philosophy, relationships — even manicure, apparently. But sooner or later I usually become more interested in why the subject matters to the person talking about it.

"The topic is often just the door. The person behind it is more interesting."

07 / Beliefs

Professionalism is beautiful.

I love watching people who truly master what they do. The profession itself almost doesn't matter. At a certain level, skill becomes so natural that it starts looking like magic.

Love changes the world you experience.

Not only romantic love. I mean that state in which the world somehow becomes softer, problems lose some of their weight, and suddenly there is much more around you worth loving.

ЦЕ ТАК.

Ukrainian has a wonderfully simple expression: це так — 'it is so.' Not everything needs to be immediately judged, resisted or divided into good and bad. Sometimes it helps to see reality as it is first.

"And that's part of the fun."

"I don't know exactly where all of this is going, and I'm increasingly comfortable with that. There are still things I want to build, places I want to see, people I haven't met, songs I haven't sung, and entire subjects I don't yet know I'm interested in. For now, that's more than enough direction."
